Labour Party Conference blog by Rosie Day, Director of London Property Alliance (WPA & CPA)
This week I attended Labour conference in Brighton, to continue London Property Alliance (WPA & CPA)’s political engagement programme.
While activists battled it out on the conference floor about Labour’s Brexit position, we held a fringe event with politicians and business leaders about Central London. WPA Chair Craig McWilliam asked the roundtable: how do we make Central London work for all? How do we balance the needs of the area’s 230,000 residents with its role as a global business district?
It was a fascinating discussion covering housing, the problems cause by short-term lets, changing demographics, tech, retail, transport, air quality and sustainability.
Thanks to attendees Karen Buck MP, Tom Sleigh, Olivia Harris, Richard Brown, Jace Tyrrell, Susan Freeman, Gemma Doyle and many more. The discussion will feed into a report by Centre for London – watch out for it in 2020!
And I was honoured to attend another City of London Corporation conference dinner. The keynote speaker was Cllr Peter John OBE – Leader of London Councils – who spoke passionately about the value of local government and the need for Civic Radicalism. It was an inspiring speech on the power of politics, when dialogue and collaboration is needed more than ever.
